HONG KONG BOOK FAIR 2012     18 - 24 JULY 2012 / HONG KONG CONVENTION AND EXHIBITION CENTRE
Reading the World
OPEN A NEW CHAPTER IN BUSINESS
The habit of reading is alive and well in Asia, with around 950,000 people turning out to see what publishers and distributors had to offer at the HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair 2011. The new record is strong evidence that the written word, electronic or print, is more powerful than ever.
BRIGHT FUTURE FOR BOOKS
There is no doubt the audience is enthusiastic so the stage is set for a highly successful Hong Kong Book Fair 2012, the show's 23rd edition.
An onsite survey of 2011 visitors revealed that 76% came to obtain first-hand information on new releases. The 526 exhibitors - also a record - who came from 24 countries and regions in 2011 presented their line-up to an eager public. Exhibitors were also able to meet industry peers and conduct business at trade level.
HONG KONG, PUBLISHING HUB
For many years Hong Kong has been acknowledged as a Chinese language publishing centre. Indeed, the 2011 visitor figure included some 15,000 tourists, 13 per cent more than 2010 and largely from the Chinese mainland, Macau and Taiwan. Exhibitors looking to access these important markets benefit from the strong credibility of the fair in Chinese-language markets.
ENGLISH-LANGUAGE MARKET ON GROWTH CURVE
Increasingly Hong Kong is now seen as an important market for English publications as well. Of survey respondents at the fair, almost 40% said that they came to purchase books in English.
Regional and international book publishers and distributors of English-language books can meet the market at the Hong Kong Book Fair 2012. A special zone, English Avenue, puts the spotlight on these publications and the zone has been steadily enlarged over the last few years. Its increasing visitor numbers show that reading in English has a strong following and exhibitors in English Avenue can take advantage of this growing popularity.
ELECTRONIC AND PRINT PARTNERSHIP
Digital Publishing is still the hot topic of the publishing industry, and the e-Books & e-Learning Resources zone is 72 per cent larger this year. The 2011 fair saw the inauguration of the Future Book Store, highlighting electronic distribution of reading material. Some 10,000 visitors checked out the novel way of reading in this zone. The fair shows that downloading books or magazines is not hindering the growth of traditional print; the two media are mutually beneficial.
PRIVACY FOR B2B
Copyright Exchange Lounge is a special area in the fair in which exhibitors, publishers and literary agents can trade copyright. Exhibitors can display their publications in the lounge and reserve a meeting room for discussions with potential buyers.
The physical meeting place is complemented by Copyright Corner, an online platform for copyright exchange. In 2011, there are over 6,000 titles available for copyright exchange online.
HIVE OF ACTIVITY
Interest in the fair is heightened by cultural events. At the 2011 fair there were almost 300 events with 130,000 people participating. Book Fair events include seminars, public sessions by individual authors and public forums in which renowned writers from both the east and the west speak about their work and the creative process.
As well as fulfilling the public expectation of an international book fair, these events raised interest in reading in general.
